Areas of Specialization

Dr. Lobanoff is considered by many to be one of the top LASIK surgeons in the United States. Patients have traveled from 30 states, 13 countries and three continents to have their LASIK surgery performed by Dr. Lobanoff.

Dr. Lobanoff completed his pre-medical training at Duke University graduating Cum Laude before moving on to medical school at the University of Michigan. In 1995 he was awarded a Howard Hughes Research Fellowship and spent a year performing eye research at the National Eye Institute of the NIH (National Institutes of Health) in Washington, D.C., one of the most advanced eye research facilities in the world. From 1998 to 2001, Dr. Lobanoff trained at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where he learned the latest in ophthalmic surgical techniques and post-operative care. At Emory University Dr. Lobanoff studied under two legendary pioneers in the LASIK field, Dr. George Waring and Dr. Doyle Stulting. After his ophthalmology residency at Emory, Dr. Lobanoff completed a year-long fellowship in LASIK and refractive surgery at the University of Minnesota. This is the highest level of training a LASIK surgeon can achieve.

More recently, Dr. Lobanoff has become a world-renowned expert in the newest form of LASIK; Alcon’s Contoura topographic-guided LASIK. He has lectured on this new technology across the United States and Europe. Surgeons from across the U.S. travel to Minnesota to learn Dr. Lobanoff’s techniques first hand. He is currently involved in 3 research trials on Contoura and is developing software to make the surgery even more effective.

Dr. Lobanoff takes a personal hands-on approach to his refractive surgery practice. Unlike most LASIK centers, Dr. Lobanoff insists on meeting and examining every LASIK patient himself at the initial exam. He prides himself on taking the time with each patient to understand their refractive needs. He answers all questions thoroughly and in language everyone can understand.

For those few patients who are not candidates for LASIK, Dr. Lobanoff is able to offer the Visian ICL to restore their vision.  He has performed more Visian implant surgeries than any other surgeon in the Midwest.

Dr. Lobanoff also offers expertise in laser refractive cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, corneal transplantation, amniotic membrane grafting, conjunctival transplantation, and IOL exchanges. He has extensive experience treating corneal burns, infections, and trauma. He practices topical, no-stitch, small-incision cataract surgery to ensure patients excellent results and rapid pain-free recovery.  He uses the latest wavefront designed intraocular lenses for cataract surgery as well as the new astigmatism correcting intraocular lenses.  He is certified to use all of the new presbyopia correcting lenses (Symfony, Technis Multifocal, Restor, Crystalens and Trulign).

For patients with the genetic condition Keratoconus, Dr. Lobanoff is conducting a research trial combining riboflavin crosslinking with Contoura topographic-guided PRK. Known as the Athens’ Protocol, this technique can not only stop the disease but can simultaneously restore the cornea to a more natural shape and dramatically improve vision. Dr. Lobanoff is the only surgeon in the entire Midwest performing the Athens’ treatment for Keratoconus.

Dr. Lobanoff is married and has two children.  He is an avid skier. Mountain biking is another favorite sport.  He enjoys spending his free time at the cabin and cheering for his beloved Duke Blue Devils.
